Having pitchers hit does introduce more strategy into the game, though. If a pitcher who has thrown well comes up to bat in a situation with men on base late in a tight ball game, a manager has to decide whether or not to remove him for a pinch hitter or keep him in the game to pitch. This also puts some strain on the bullpen, because someone will have to warm up any time it's possible that a pitcher will come to the plate in a pivotal situation.
